Experimental study of strain-induced wavelength tuning in 1550nm VCSEL chips

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of controlled mechanical strain on the wavelength characteristics of Vertical- Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs), crucial components in optoelectronics, particularly in data centers. Using a custom four-point bending module, we systematically analyze the impact of strain on VCSELs by examining the wavelength evolution under varying strain levels. we report a consistent blue shift in the laser’s wavelength with increasing strain while maintaining stable power output. These findings highlight the potential of strain manipulation as a reliable technique for wavelength tuning in VCSELs, offering prospects for enhancing their performance in optical communication applications.

Salah Eddine Guessoum is a joint PhD student between BPHOT, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and CMST University of Ghent. Specializing in the field of non-linear dynamics in the group of Pr. Martin Virte, Salah's research focuses on the dynamics of VCSELs (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers) notably wavelength tuning and polarization switching of VCSELs under mechanical strain, signal modulation and optical injection locking. Holding a Master of Science degree from Sorbonne University with a focus on sensors, instrumentations, and measurements. Salah is active in extracurricular activities as he is the current president of the BPHOT student chapter and active individual in STEM outreach, he also is a cofounder of both YAPA (Young Algerian Physicist Assembly) and Physica Club ( a physics club in USTHB, Algiers).
