Pierre Chavel is a research scientist at Institut d'Optique (CNRS, Palaiseau, France) specializing in statistical optics, diffractive optics and optical systems. He has been active in learned societies (International Commission for Optics, SPIE, OSA, EOS, SFO) and has participated in a number of EU funded projects in research and teaching, including the ACTMOST micro-optics expertise project and the "Optics in Science and Technology" Erasmus Mundus master course. He has served as the Director of Laboratoire Charles Fabry, a joint research facility of CNRS and Institut d'Optique (1998-2009 and 2013-) and the manager of the Rhone-Alpes site of Institut d'Optique in Saint Etienne, France, (2008-) where research is conducted on Visual Rendering, Optical Imaging, and Security, and master level education is offered in optical engineering, image processing, and optics for energy and illumination. He is currently the chair of the French Physics Olympiads (2011-)
