Jenoptik-SPIE Photonics Technician Scholarship announcement.

BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA — SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, and JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC have established a new scholarship that will support photonics-technician students in Florida.

The new, jointly funded Jenoptik-SPIE Photonics Technician Scholarship will provide direct support for students pursuing careers as photonics technicians. The scholarships have been established for students enrolled or planning to enroll in a laser, optics, or photonics technician associate or certificate program in the state of Florida. Each of the four $3,000 scholarships will be awarded to offset tuition and fees, textbooks, computers, or a computer upgrade, as well as other supplies and equipment needed for courses of instruction. Scholarship winners will also receive a one-year complimentary SPIE Student Membership.

There’s a critical need for skilled optics and photonics technicians across the globe. In recent years, SPIE has been particularly active in supporting ways to address that need through scholarships and other technician-focused resources, as well as highlighting colleges with relevant programs. “The optics, photonics, and imaging industries are growing exponentially, and there’s a real need for skilled optics and photonics technicians who can continue to bring engineers’ visions to fruition,” says SPIE CEO Kent Rochford. “We are delighted to be working with Jenoptik to support technician students in their exciting career journey.”

“Jenoptik is pleased to partner with SPIE and expand our existing photonics-technician scholarship program,” says President of JENOPTIK Optical Systems, LLC Jay Kumler. “Working together with SPIE, we will double the number of students that we are supporting from two to four. The need is great and if the industry and SPIE join forces, we can continue to enable the development of future technicians that are essential in helping to create a better future for all through photonics.”

All current scholarship applicants must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a laser, optics, or photonics technician associate or certificate program for the 2023-2024 school year at an educational institute in Florida. Application requirements also include technician-program information, a resume, and a personal essay.
