The National Academy of Inventors announced their 2017 Fellows on 12 December. Of the 155 leaders of academic invention that will be inducted in April as part of the Seventh Annual NAI Conference, eleven were Members of the Society, including nine SPIE Fellows and two SPIE Members.

The NAI describes election to NAI Fellow status as the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society. According to the 2017 NAI Activities Report, NAI Fellows have generated more than 9,400 licensed technologies and companies and created more than 1.3 million jobs, with over $137 billion in revenue generated based on their discoveries.
