Tailoring the visual appearance with disordered metasurfaces (Invited Paper)

10 April 2024 • 12:00 - 12:30 CEST | Etoile C, Niveau/Level 1

Abstract

We propose a new application of metasurfaces, namely the harnessing of the visual appearance. We demonstrate that disordered metasurfaces composed of high-index resonant metaatoms, once deposited on macroscopic objects, offer visual appearances with novel visual properties.

Philippe Lalanne serves as a CNRS Research Scientist. While originally specializing in optics, he has become an expert in nanoscale electrodynamics. After a sabbatical year at the Institute of Optics in Rochester in 1995, he embarked on research in the field of diffractive optics. Back in France at the Charles Fabry Laboratory in Palaiseau, he demonstrated the very first high-NA high-efficiency optical metalenses. He also established fundamental principles for designing high-quality microcavities and elucidated the role of plasmons in extraordinary optical transmissions. Presently, at the Laboratoire Photonique, Numérique et Nanosciences in Bordeaux, his research is centered on the non-Hermitian, dissipative interaction of light with nanoresonators, as well as the attributes of disordered optical metasurfaces. Notably, from 2018 to 2022, he held the position of Director for the GDR Ondes. He received several distinctions, including the prestigious 2022 ERC Advanced grant. He is a fello
