SPIE Photonics Europe 2016 moved ahead as scheduled

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the people of Brussels and all those impacted by the recent attacks. SPIE was in close communication with authorities regarding the safety of the city. We received assurances that increased security measures were in place and that Brussels was returning to normal operation and open for business, with Brussels airport officials evaluating scenarios and timing for resuming flights.

Brussels air travel was a rapidly changing situation, some flights have already been impacted. We committed to moving forward with the meeting but recognized some people needed to make alternative travel plans in order to reach Brussels.

We were also in dialogue with the Symposia and Conference chairs as well as the SPIE Executive Committee and solicited their feedback on the situation. We received overwhelming support in favor of continuing the meeting as scheduled. Given this feedback SPIE Photonics Europe was held as planned.

We understood that there were many questions about security and logistics. We assembled information with input from the authorities in Brussels and at the facility detailing increased security measures that were put into place to ensure the safety of visitors to the city and attendees at the meeting. We continually updated the details on the Travel to Brussels webpage as they became available.

While we realize travel under these circumstances was a very personal decision, we were pleased to see so many of you in Brussels at Photonics Europe 2016.
