Analytical model of CW holmium-doped fiber laser

Abstract

An analytical model of holmium-doped fiber laser is proposed and verified experimentally. The model is based on a two-level model, assumes only transitions between levels 5I8 and 5I7 of the Ho3+ ion in silica, and enables to express the threshold pump power and laser slope efficiency in a closed form. The effect of intrinsic losses is modeled by a physically motivated semi-empirical formula. The model is compared with a numerical one and its application limits are discussed.

Jan Pokorný received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Physical Engineering and Physical Electronics respectively from the Czech Technical University in Prague, Czechia in 2021 and 2023 respectively. He is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. study program at the aforementioned university. He is with the Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Czech Academy of Sciences since 2019. His research interests include fiber lasers and amplifiers based mainly on thulium doped fibers, numerical simulation of lasers and amplifiers, numerical simulation and characterisation of active fibers.
