BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - During a ceremony immediately preceding the SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing plenary yesterday evening in Orlando, Florida, USA, corporate director of strategic development Dr. Misty Blowers was awarded the 2018 SPIE Early Achievement Award, industry focus, for her dedication to advancing applied machine learning solutions to help solve real world problems, and for contributions to SPIE, the US Air Force, and US National Security.
Dr. Blowers' accomplishments include large-scale research and development programs for the US Department of Defense where she successfully applied her knowledge and expertise in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning to develop new technologies, patented methods, and to advance the state of the art by successfully applying new algorithms across multiple application domains. Her PhD in Applied Science and Engineering combines a multi-faceted background in control system process design and computer science. Dr. Blowers is the Director of Research, Development, and Strategy at Peraton and also serves as an adjunct professor of blockchain technologies at George Mason University.
For many years, Dr. Blowers has served on SPIE conference committees for machine intelligence and disruptive technologies and she recently has taken a lead role in expanding the breadth of conference research topics and invited speakers. Her advocacy of science, technology, engineering and math education has enabled college students to participate in and attend SPIE conferences: she was instrumental seeking outside sponsorship and support for four college students to attend the 2017 SPIE Defense + Security Disruptive Technologies in Sensors and Sensor Systems conference.
"Dr. Blowers successfully enabled insightful privacy discussions amongst federal government official and many cybersecurity thought leaders from industry," says Val Red, cyber integration program manager at Air Force Research Laboratory. "Her leadership not only enhanced cybersecurity, optics and photonics in support of SPIE, she has also built bridges across industry, government and non-profits."
The Early Career Achievement Award, industry focus, is presented in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions in the engineering or scientific fields of relevance to SPIE.
