Profile Summary

Herminso is a physicist and optical scientist/engineer who specializes in methodologies for industrial applications of X-ray computed tomography (CT) in the areas of dimensional metrology, 3D imaging, and nondestructive testing (NDT). X-ray CT, or CAT Scan, has been traditionally used for medical diagnosis and nondestructive evaluation of industrial components and material analysis (identification and location of internal features such as unwanted inclusions or defects), but with the recent advances of the industrial X-ray CT technology, the technique can be used to measure a specimen’s geometrical dimensions. As a result, CT now contributes to the areas of metrology and geometry analysis for tech companies that produce manufactured parts—and their final users—in a variety of industries such as automotive, electronics, aerospace, medical devices, cast materials, injection molding plastics, 3D printing or additive manufacturing. Such measurement is very important for the assessment of a part’s functional features (i.e., inspection and quality control), in particular for components’ internal geometry because X-ray CT seems to be the only available technology that can accurately determine dimensions of internal or hidden structures without destroying the part. While dimensional accuracy is not crucial for medical diagnoses, quantitative dimensional analysis is the essence of X-ray CT metrology. Herminso has been involved in studying the accuracy and precision of X-ray CT metrology technologies and also in comparing its performance with other existing measuring techniques, in particular coordinate measurement machines (CMMs). He has worked in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB), and Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology. In 2015, Herminso was recruited by Nikon Metrology where he is employed full-time as an X-ray/CT Metrology Specialist.
