High-power and widely tunable laser integrated with a multichannel SOA array on a silicon nitride platform

27 January 2025 • 5:15 PM - 5:35 PM PST | Moscone South, Room 307 (Level 3)

Abstract

Hybrid integration of Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs) with silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguides enables compact on-chip light sources with outstanding properties for integrated photonics applications. For example, LiDAR systems used in robotics, drones, and autonomous vehicles, require high coherence, compactness, and power-scalability over multiple channels. To meet these requirements, we present a widely tunable and narrow-linewidth InP/Si3N4 hybrid-integrated laser, which is co-integrated with a 4-channel SOA array for power amplification across multiple output channels. The co-integrated device is compact, with a total footprint of only 6 × 4.7 mm2. The laser features a wavelength tuning range of 90 nm, ranging from 1490-1585 nm and exhibits an intrinsic linewidth of 552 Hz. The SOA array provides amplification for a total output power of 187 mW added up over four fiber-coupled output channels.

Dimitri Geskus is born in the Netherlands in 1979. He developed high power rare earth doped channel waveguide lasers during his PhD until 2011. In 2010 Dimitri joined XiO Photonics in the Netherlands with the main activity to develop modules based on photonic devices. And in 2013 he receives a Brazilian research grant in the program for talented young scientists to develop blue lasers in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2015, Dimitri started as researcher at the KTH in Stockholm in Sweden, setting up a new research group to develop ultranarrow linewidth lasers for sensor applications. In 2016 he returned to the team of XiO Photonics (acquired by LioniX International), to get involved in the development of external cavity lasers using SiN feedback circuitry. Since 2021, Dimitri fulfills the role of CTO at Chilas BV. Dimitri is (co)author of more than 30 journal publications, 100 conference publication and two patents, all in the field of lasers and integrated optics.
