Edge-preserving denoising and super-resolution in OCT imagery using deep shifted steered mixture of experts (S-SMoE) gating networks

Abstract

We introduce a novel enhancement method for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images, combining a "shifted steered mixture of experts" with an autoencoder for simultaneous denoising and super-resolution. This method uniquely avoids retraining for different scaling factors and allows on-the-fly adjustments for edge sharpening or defocusing. Tested on our in-house OCT dataset, it provides superior denoising and edge preservation without the computational burden of traditional deep learning approaches. Performance assessments demonstrate its advantage over current state-of-the-art methods in both subjective and objective (PSNR, perceptual metrics) evaluations.

Aytac is pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He holds M.Sc. degrees in Information System Engineering and Applied Mathematics from Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey, and CY Cergy Paris University, France, respectively. His research focuses on inverse problems, numerical optimization, algorithmic machine learning, and mathematical foundations of computational imaging. This includes applications in conventional, plenoptic, and medical imaging systems. Aytac's professional experience extends to a role as a Research Software Engineer at INRAE Avignon, France, and at Ultraelectronics Montréal, where he engaged in a mathematical and engineering collaboration with École de Technologie Supérieure, Université du Québec.
