Biomedical applications of metabolic two-photon excited fluorescence lifetime microscopy

Abstract

Two-photon excited fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a powerful tool for visualizing minute changes in the chemical makeup of biological samples in a spatially resolved manner. Here, we present three applications of this concept from the field of biomedicine: (1) detection of tumor tissue in head and neck cancer samples, (2) sepsis characterization in mouse kidney tissue, and (3) characterization of the host response to influenza infection in lung tissue.

Stella Greiner completed her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 2021 during which she was supported by the Deutschandstipendium scholarship for a year. Since December 2020 she is holder of a scholarship of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. During her master studies she specialized in computational chemistry and spectroscopy. She is currently working on her master thesis titled “Biomedical applications of two-photon excited FLIM” with a focus on detection of sepsis in murine kidney tissue. After finishing in spring 2024, she will continue her research as a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Jürgen Popp in Jena.
