The most interesting part of my job and professional activities is photonic crystals, a dynamic direction of modern solid state physics. Photonic crystals are artificial, periodic dielectrics that enable engineering of the most fundamental properties of electromagnetic waves. Unlike traditional semiconductors, photonic crystal materials execute novel functions through selective trapping or "localization of light" using engineered defects withing the dielectric lattice. This is of great practical importance for optical communications and information processing. Thus the principal scientific direction of my professional activities is the fabrication and investigation of silicon two-dimensional photonic crystals for light emitting and detector element fabrication.
