Biography

Dr. Badawy is a world leading researcher in video surveillance technology and he published:

  • more than 400 peer-reviewed technical papers
  • 50+ contributions to develop the ISO standards, which is more than 75% of the hardware reference model for the H.264 compression standard.
  • "Primary contributor" in the VSI Alliance™ developing the "Platform-Based Design Definitions and Taxonomy, (PBD 11.0), 2003".
  • 13 books and conference proceedings He is a coauthor to the International video standards known as MPEG4/H.264.

He represents Canada in ISO/TC223 - Societal Security Chairman of the Canadian Advisory Committee (CAC) on ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC6 "Telecommunications and Information Exchange Between Systems" and head of the Canadian Delegation. He received over 51 international and national awards for his technical, commercialization, innovation and contribution to the industry, academia and society. Among so many things he enjoys giving back and as a mentor in the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, he supports Canadian below 34 years to start and build their businesses.

Lecture Title(s)

A Video Algorithm: Can we build a business: Video analytics is an exciting, emerging area of the security and surveillance industry that offers solutions to the current problem of non-responsive surveillance. Complex algorithms look for specified changes in the video feed and then alert security personnel to threats so they can immediately intervene. The analytic process can be used for various purposes such as: 

  • motion detection of specific objects and movements such as a person running when everyone else is walking, 
  • object detection such as a bag left in a specific public area,
  • piggybacking or tailgating in which an individual follows another person into a secure area,
  • perimeter protection which sends an alert when a specific boundary is crossed.

Video analytics offers the security market several benefits including:

  • less dependence on human vigilance
  • fewer personnel to monitor video feeds
  • ability to respond to immediate threats
  • ability to quickly search and retrieve specified security events.

This tutorial discusses the requirements to build a successful business. It analyzes several examples of startup and spin-off. It discusses the requirement to build such a business and how to start. It address the entrepreneurial spirit, manage expectation, balance effort, and provide a roadmap for what to do.

Video Analytics: The hard Inverted Problem: Real-time video compression is computationally expensive due to the requirement of high compression efficiency. General-purpose processors and software acceleration can meet the requirement using high-end x86 Processors (P4, Athlon) to encode video in real time, but they are not suitable for small, low-power devices. Hardware acceleration with dedicated cores found a place in such cases by offering tiny size and low power, hence opening many opportunities for state-of-the-art video compression applications. The implementation schemes for the MPEG-4 fall in to three main categories, i.e. software, hardware-software co-design and full hardware. 1) Software Implementation: The software implementation is often seen on the Internet and PC applications with video CODEC software running on the PC's processor. It is not suitable for portable applications where price and power consumption of processor are often the main limitations. This tutorial presents why it is hard to develop video analytics from imaging to processing. 

Lab-on-Chip: Concept to Application:  Lab-on-a chip technology is exciting the interest of scientists in many areas. This technology can be used not only to synthesize chemicals, biological, cancer cells, and DNA efficiently and economically but also to carry out biological and clinical analyses, to perform combinatorial chemistry, and to carry out full-scale analyses from sample introduction to cell separation, manipulation and detection, on a single, miniaturized device. Hence, the underpinning concept of Lab-on-a-chip is the integration of several functional units such as actuation, sensing, separation, concentration, and detection systems onto one chip. On the other hand, lab-on-a-chip, holds the promise of cheaper, better and faster biological analysis. This tutorial will cover the following aspects:

  • Quanttive, the three main parts of the Lab-on-a-chip (i.e. Actuation, Sensing, and Read-out circuit)
  • Concepts and State of the art in the area of Lab-on-a-chip based electric field sensing.
  • Circuits and systems used for sensing different phenomena, such as: pH sensors, thermal sensing, magnetic field sensing and electric field sensing, will be covered.
  • Different current-mode readout circuits for lab-on-a-chip applications.
  • The tutorial also will present the research results and systems that are developed and funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Strategic Project titled "A system on a chip platform for real-time bio-technology applications
