Was born February 4, 1944; MS in Radiophysics and Electronics (1966), Candidate of Sciences in Optics (PhD, 1973), and Doctor of Science in Quantum Physics (1982) from Saratov State University, Russia. He is a professor and holds the optics and biomedical physics chair and is a director of Research-educational institute of optics and biophotonics at Saratov State University. He has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed papers and books, including his latest, Tissue Optics. Light Scattering Methods and Instrumentation for Medical Diagnosis (SPIE Tutorial Texts in Optical Engineering, Vol. TT38, 2000), Handbook of Optical Biomedical Diagnostics (SPIE Press, Vol. PM107, 2002), and Coherent-Domain Optical Methods for Biomedical Diagnostics, Environmental and Material Science (Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, USA, vol. 1 & 2, 2004). Since 1992, Prof. Tuchin has been the instructor of SPIE and OSA short courses on biomedical optics and is an editorial board member of a number of International journals. He is Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation and SPIE Fellow.

Tissue Optics and Controlling of Tissue and Blood Optical Properties
Abstract: This course presents structural and optical models of tissues with basic single and multiple scattering, with ordered and randomly distributed scatterers. Coherent, spatially-modulated, and polarized light propagation in random and quasi-organized tissues will be considered. It will be shown that tissue reflection and transmission, as well as scattered intensity and polarization can be effectively controlled by changes of its structure and refractive index of tissue components. Mechanisms of optical clearing (OC) at optical immersion of turbid tissues will be analyzed. Matching of refractive indices of scatterers and ground matter as a main mechanism of optical clearing at administration of optical clearing agents (OCA) for control of optical properties of tissues and blood will be discussed. Controllable tissue dehydration and rehydration and the usage of OC for optical and laser diagnostic and therapeutic purposes will be demonstrated. A considerable increase of penetration depth of probing light and image contrast will be shown. Optical monitoring of endogenous and exogenous matter diffusion within a tissue also will be demonstrated. A considerable improvement of diagnostic methods and instruments, based on CW, time- and spatially-resolved light scattering, OCT, SHG, two-photon and confocal microscopy, speckle and polarization-sensitive techniques, will be shown for various medical applications. These applications include tissue and blood spectroscopy, monitoring of structure and imaging of the human skin, eye tissues, cerebral membrane, scull, bone, cartilage, tendon, body's interior tissues (vessel wall, esophagus, stomach), blood vessel net and lymph nodes, as well as small animals.
