New Visiting Lecturers

Over the past few months, SPIE Student Services has added several new faces to the Visiting Lecturer directory. Take some time and get familiar with the newest volunteers.

Johannes de Boer
OCT, Polarization and Dynamic Light Scattering Techniques in Biophotonics

Dr. de Boer graduated from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1995, obtaining his Ph.D. in experimental physics. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In 1997 he moved to the Beckman Laser Institute, University of California at Irvine as an Academic Assistant Researcher and was promoted to Assistant Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Surgery, in 1998. Dr. de Boer joined the Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine, Harvard Medical School in 2001 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor, Harvard Medical School, in 2005. In 2008 Dr. de Boer moved back to the Netherlands, taking up a full professor position at the Physics Department, VU University, Amsterdam, and Head of the Imaging Group at the Rotterdam Ophthalmic Institute, Rotterdam. In 2010 he became director of the Institute for Lasers, Life and Biophotonics Amsterdam (LaserLaB Amsterdam). He is currently developing a Biomedical Photonics program at the VU University and the VU medical center, Amsterdam.

Originally from South Auckland in New Zealand, John Dudley received B.Sc and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Auckland in 1987 and 1992 respectively. In 1992 and 1993, he carried out postdoctoral research at the University of St Andrews in Scotland before taking a lecturing position in 1994 at the University of Auckland. In 2000, he was appointed Professor at the University of Franche-Comte in Besancon, France, where he heads the Optoelectronics and Photonics research section of the CNRS research institute FEMTO-ST. He was named a member of the Institut Universitaire de France in 2005 and elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America in 2007. He was an IEEE LEOS Distinguished Lecturer for the period 2008-2010, a Member of the International Council on Quantum Electronics, and chaired the board of the Quantum Electronics and Optics Division of the European Physical Society from 2008-2010. He is currently a Deputy Editor of Optics Express.

Alaina G. Levine is President of Quantum Success Solutions, a leadership training enterprise with a focus on advancing the professional development expertise of engineers and scientists. She has been advising emerging and established engineers and scientists about their careers for over a decade. The author of over 85 articles pertaining to science, science careers and business in such publications as Science and Nature Magazines, Levine currently writes the Profiles in Versatility column for the American Physical Society's national publication, APS News. Previously, she directed a master's program in science and business and taught entrepreneurship to science graduate students at the University of Arizona. She has given over 375 workshops and seminars around the country and in Europe. She holds degrees in mathematics and anthropology, and is a Robert Bosch Stiftung Science Journalism Fellow.

Raúl José Martín Palma

Raúl J. Martín-Palma is a professor of physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain). He received his M.S. degree in applied physics in 1995 and his Ph.D. in physics in 2000, both from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has been a post-doctoral Fellow at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, NJ, USA) and a visiting professor at The Pennsylvania State University (USA). He has received young scientists’ awards from the European Materials Research Society and Materials Research Society (USA) for his research on nanostructured materials.

Samarendra Mohanty

Prof. Samar Mohanty is leading Biophysics and Physiology Group at University of Texas, Arlington. His group is using photonics technology (optical tweezers, laser scissors, multiphoton/confocal microscopy, near-field scanning optical microscopy, digital holographic microscopy) combined with nanotechnology, microfluidics, genetics, and electrical tools for manipulating and imaging molecular and cellular processes from single cell to whole organism level. He has over 60 research papers, several patents to his name. Samar has carried out biophotonics research in several countries including India, Germany, Italy, UK and Singapore. The Biophysics and Physiology Group enjoys strong national and international collaborations. Samar has co-founded several start up companies based on photonics technologies and encourages Academic-industry partnerships for translating research innovations to routine usage.

Sune Svanberg was born in 1943 in Trollhättan, Sweden. After matriculation exam in Trollhättan in 1962 he started studies of natural sciences at the University of Göteborg, where he received his BSc in 1966. He enrolled the graduate school in physics at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg and first spent half a year at the Technical University of Berlin (Prof. H. Bucka) studying atomic resonance spectroscopy. He brought this field back to his university and defended his PhD in this field 1972 (Thesis advisor: Prof. I. Lindgren). After a post-doc year at Columbia University, New York (Prof. W. Happer) and initial work on atomic laser spectroscopy he continued laser-based spectroscopy at Chalmers up till 1980, when he became professor and head of the Atomic Physics Division at Lund Institute of Technology (technical faculty at Lund University). He has supervised a large number of graduate students to their PhD in Physics. He is the coauthor of about 580 scientific papers and over 30 patents and patent applications, and he helped in the formation of several spin-off companies.
