SPIE Scholarships


In 2019 SPIE awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to 84 outstanding individuals for their potential long-range contribution to optics, photonics, or other related fields. Individual scholarships typically range from $3,000 to $11,000. 

SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarships are open to students located anywhere in the world who are studying optics, photonics, or related fields.

  • You must be a Student Member of SPIE. The standard Student Membership fee is $20.

  • High school, pre-university, and secondary school students can receive a one-year complimentary Student Membership. Fill in the Pre-College Membership Application Form and email to scholarships@spie.org.

  • You must be enrolled in an optics, photonics, or other related program (e.g., physics, electrical engineering, photonics technician) for the entire school year beginning in Fall 2020. Applicants who have received a terminal degree such as MD, JD, PhD, etc. are not eligible to apply.

The 2020 application cycle is now closed. The 2021 application cycle will open in October 2020.

SPIE is incorporated in the state of California, United States, and abides by US laws that may restrict cash awards to residents of some countries. To qualify for an award, students and institutions must be eligible to receive funds under US federal guidelines.
