10 Year Anniversary for SPIE Student Chapters

SPIE Student Services wishes to extend a special congratulations to our student chapters who have accomplished 10 years of active participation in education, professional development, and leadership in optics and photonics! Three chapters reached the 10-year milestone in 2013.

"Since it's foundation 10 years ago, the Monterrey chapter has achieved several significant accomplishments that include for example, the active participation of our students in international SPIE conferences and the involvement of undergrad students in outreach activities. Perhaps the greatest achievement is the series of optical workshops that our members usually give in elementary schools. These activities are very relevant to bring the attention of our children to the amazing world of science and optics in particular," said Dr. Julio C. Gutiérrez-Vega, Monterrey student chapter advisor.

"The main accomplishment of the SPIE student chapter is that it was the first student chapter in Mexico. Since 2003 it has paved the way for the formation of many other chapters all over the country. It has definitely been a reference for outreach activities and has closely collaborated and helped building a strong network for research experiences and resources between optics students in Mexico", Dr. Raúl I. Hernández Aranda, founding member of Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey Chapter.
