Apply to the Optical Design Challenge

Papers submitted to the Optical Architectures for Displays and Sensing in AR, VR, MR Conference (AVR01) may be eligible to apply to the 2020 Student Optical Design Challenge and win financial awards. Candidates must be students. Judges will review the optical design and the resulting optical specs (including tolerancing), as well as the actual work. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes are awarded.

Optical Design Challenge Details

The challenge consists of:

Abstract and manuscript submission (manuscripts are reviewed and scored)
Onsite poster presentation (reviewed and scored)
Onsite "pitch" presentation (reviewed and scored)

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible? The Student Optical Design Challenge is open to any full-time student registered at an academic or research institute, performing their work either in an academic lab, a research institute or as an internship in an external company.
Can I have co-authors? Yes, any number of them, from either academy or industry, but the primary author /presenter must be registered as a student.

What software can I use? The optical design software is at the choice of the student. However, participating sponsors are offering their optical design software available free of charge for any student registering in this challenge. Email innovation@spie.org to enquire about software options.

Will I be required to present in the conference or can I just participate in the challenge? Yes, in order to be eligible for the Student Optical Design Challenge, the presenter must also give a technical talk in the Optical Architectures for Displays and Sensing in AR, VR, MR 2020 conference.
