Quantum efficiency of delta-doped CCD201-20 detectors for sub-orbital and space missions

Abstract

We will outline the performance of delta-doped, photon-counting UV detectors (EMCCDs). We will present the recent quantum efficiency (QE) data from devices optimized for the FIREBall-2, an astrophysics balloon mission with a bandpass centered at 205 nm, as well as devices optimized heliophysics instrumentation for observing nitric oxide (NO) signals at 215. We will also discuss the newest detector developed for FIREBall-2 with an integrated solar-blind, UV bandpass filter; analysis will include an overall detector noise characterization.

Dr. Kyne has been the detector scientist for 9 years for the balloon mission called FIREBall-2 with experience in detector characterization, specifically for photon counting detectors, such as EMCCDs (Electron Multiplying CCD). She also has relevant CCD and CMOS experience for the UVEX MIDEX mission and the SPARCS CubeSat. She has in-depth knowledge using the NuVu Controller and using this for CCD clocking optimization, including full development of the camera that was eventually flown on FIREBall-2 in Sept. 2018 and 2023, and funded for a third flight. She has extensive experience with cryo and vacuum development, and building the necessary hardware and software for detector operations. She has worked on detector development for ground-based observing as well as future space based missions.
