Zakya Kafafi

SPIE Fellow Zakya Kafafi, adjunct professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Lehigh University, received the 2017 Hillebrand Prize from the Chemical Society of Washington (CSW), a local section of the American Chemistry Society (ACS). CSW 2017 President Jason E. Schaff presented the award to Kafafi at a ceremony on 29 March 2018.
According to the ACS website, the annual Hillebrand Prize of the Chemical Society of Washington is awarded for original contributions to the science of chemistry by a member or members of CSW, and is named for William F. Hillebrand (1853-1925), one of Washington’s most distinguished chemists. The prize is recognized nationally as a mark of significant accomplishment in chemistry. Kafafi received this award in recognition of her pioneering contributions to organic optics and electronics technologies through innovative physical chemistry and materials chemistry research.
Kafafi is the is the inaugural deputy editor for Chemical, Physical, Materials Sciences, and Engineering of Science Advances, the newly launched online, open access journal by Science. She is also founding editor and editor-in-chief of the SPIE Journal of Photonics for Energy. She has published dozens of manuscripts, review articles, book chapters, and conference proceedings with SPIE, as well as serving on programs committees and as conference chairs for several SPIE events. Currently, she is co-chair for the 2018 Organic Photonics + Electronics Symposium at SPIE Optics+Photonics this August. For her continual involvement in and support of the Society, she was named an SPIE Fellow in 2005.
