University of Surrey appoints David Sampson Vice-Provost of Research and Innovation

SPIE Fellow and Board Member David Sampson, head of the Optical and Biomedical Engineering Laboratory and director of the Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Analysis at the University of Western Australia, will take on a new role as Vice Provost of Research and Innovation at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. He will begin his tenure on 15 January 2018.

The university announced his appointment in August. Professor Max Lu, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey, said in the statement that as, “[a]n internationally-recognized authority in photonics, David’s outstanding personal research record and wealth of experience in both the higher education and government sectors make him the ideal leader to drive forward our institution’s ambitious research and innovation strategy.”

Sampson brings over 25 years of research experience to the role and is an expert in his field. He is very active in the Society as well, presenting and publishing dozens of times with SPIE Conference Proceedings and taking an active involvement in conference committees for over a decade. He is an editorial board member of the SPIE's Journal of Biomedical Optics and has published in the journal numerous times. For his contributions to the Society and the greater photonics community, he was made an SPIE Fellow in 2013. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and is on the Fellows Committee and the Publications Committee.
