Terence O’Brien and Darshay Webb, both undergraduates majoring in Optical Systems at Monroe Community College (MCC), were selected to receive the inaugural Robert “Bob” Novak Memorial Scholarship. Supported by SPIE and managed by MCC in Rochester, New York, the American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association (APOMA) established the fund to honor founding APOMA member and colleague, Bob Novak. The proceeds of the fund are earmarked to support education in optics manufacturing through a perpetual scholarship in Novak’s name.

A former SPIE Member, Bob Novak passed away December 6, 2014, leaving a lasting legacy of enthusiasm and advocacy for optics education and for the students he taught. Novak was the chair of the Optical Technology Department at MCC for 37 years, project director of the Center for Advanced Optical Technology for the State of New York, and a longtime board director of APOMA.

Mr. Webb noted in his statement, "I am both very honored and highly esteemed to be one of the first recipients of SPIE, The International Society for Optics and Photonics Scholarship in memory of Bob Novak." And in the spirit of the award has "great ambition to spread the knowledge of optics throughout the community."

Mr. O’Brien echoed Mr. Webb’s sentiment, "The generosity of this scholarship allows me to take one step closer to joining an exciting and growing industry in the Rochester area. This scholarship will allow me to give back to my community in many ways and will bring a much greater return to my life in the end."
