    The Cooper Union appoints Barry Shoop new engineering dean

    SPIE Fellow Barry Shoop, professor of Electrical Engineering and head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, will take on a new role as Dean of the Albert Nerken School of Engineering at The Cooper Union in New York. He will begin his tenure in January 2019.

    The Cooper Union is a free center of learning and civic discourse with a mission to inspire inventive, creative, and influential voices in architecture, art, and engineering to address the critical challenges and opportunities of our time. The organization announced Shoop’s appointment in May. President Laura Sparks said in a statement that, “[h]is distinguished career includes extensive experience and leadership in educational pedagogy and curriculum development as well as demonstrated capacity in building innovative, diverse, and cross-disciplinary initiatives – all attributes that are essential to our future.”

    Shoop brings nearly 25 years of academic experience to the role and is an expert in his field. He is very engaged in the Society as well, taking an active part in the Education Committee, Nominating Committee, and Strategic Planning Committee. He has presented and published several times with SPIE Conference Proceedings and published in SPIE journals. For his contributions to the Society and the greater photonics community, he was made an SPIE Fellow in 2003.
