SUNY Board of Trustees Appoints Kristina Johnson as the 13th Chancellor 27 April 2017
The State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees announced the appointment of SPIE Fellow and Past Board Member Kristina Johnson as its 13th chancellor 24 April. Johnson is a former Johns Hopkins University provost, Duke University dean of the Pratt School of Engineering, and U.S. Under Secretary of Energy. SUNY is the largest system of public higher education in the U.S., comprised of 29 four-year colleges and universities and 30 community colleges, which serve a total of roughly 440,000 full- and part-time students. Johnson, whose tenure begins 5 September, will succeed Nancy Zimpher, SUNY’s first female chancellor, who is credited with having elevated the system during her eight-year tenure. In a statement released by SUNY, the current chancellor noted, “Dr. Johnson is a proven leader and innovator whose cross-sector experience and strong belief in the power of education will be a great benefit to The State University of New York.” Zimpher is referring to Johnson's broad career spanning academia, industry, and government, which includes serving as Under Secretary of Energy in the Obama Administration. Currently, Johnson serves as founder and chief executive officer of Cube Hydro Partners, LLC, which develops hydroelectric generation facilities that provide clean energy to communities and businesses throughout the country. She is also credited with helping to create the technology behind 3D glasses, which earned her a place in the National Academy of Engineers and induction into the US Inventors Hall of Fame. Her experience in higher education includes roles as Johns Hopkins University provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, dean of the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University, and professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Made a Fellow of the Society in 2008, Johnson also served as Member of the Board from 2006 to 2008. Her numerous other contributions to SPIE include serving on the Publications Committee, the Symposia Committee, and on conference program committees. At conferences, she also lent her expertise as a conference chair, session chair, and as an instructor for courses at events.
