Mark Clampin

SPIE Fellow Mark Clampin was promoted from deputy director to director of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate at NASA. The Sciences and Exploration Directorate is the largest Earth and space science research organization in the world. The Directorate is part of Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Clampin will oversee a team of researchers working with engineers, computer programmers, technologists, and other team members to develop the cutting-edge technology needed for space-based research.
Clampin has a long history with NASA. Prior to his role as deputy director of the Directorate, he served at Goddard Space Flight Center as the James Webb Space Telescope Observatory Project Scientist, and then as director of the Astrophysics Science Division. Before joining the Goddard facility, Clampin was the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Group Lead at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), where he worked on three Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Servicing Missions.
Clampin, who has served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS) since its inception in 2014, has published with the Society, and has been an active volunteer in conference planning. He has served as conference chair or symposium chair over a dozen times, delivering over 90 presentations at SPIE events since he began his involvement with the Society in the 90s. For his many contributions to SPIE and the greater optics and photonics community, he was promoted to SPIE Fellow in 2014.
