María Josefa Yzuel has been awarded the 2017 Gender Equality Award 20 March 2017
University of Alicante Governing Council unanimously agreed to present SPIE Past President and Fellow María Josefa Yzuel, professor emeritus of the Department of Physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with the Gender Equality Award- IgUAldad 2107. Yzuel received the award on Wednesday, 8 March 2017 during institutional events organized to celebrate International Women's Day. The Gender Equality Award recognizes the work carried out by individuals, groups, entities or institutions which stand out for their defense of equality between women and men, and also to professionals whose trajectory exemplifies academic excellence, for giving visibility to the contribution of women in scientific advances and social progress, and helping to break away from the androcentric perspective prevailing over science, research and academia. Yzuel was recognized for her commitment to gender equality, and her academic and scientific careers. Throughout her career she has defended the role of women in science and has given visibility to their contribution to social development and progress. From the creation of the Association of Women Researchers and Technologists, she has worked towards defending non-discrimination and equal opportunities for women and men in academia with the objective of helping and fostering the incorporation of young women researchers into the research field. Her commitment led her to found the Women Physicists’ Group of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics. She is also involved in SPIE Women in Optics. In addition to serving as President of SPIE in 2009, she has served as Vice President of the International Commission for Optics, General Secretary of the European Optical Society, and President of the Spanish Society of Optics. She worked at the International Centre for Science and Technology in Trieste on projects with scientists from developing countries and served as president of the Spanish Committee of the International Year of Light 2015.
