Frances Ligler named Innovator of the Year by North Carolina State University 26 October 2017
On 13 October, on behalf of the Office of Technology Commercialization and New Ventures at North Carolina State University (NCSU), University Chancellor Randy Woodson presented the coveted Innovator of the Year award to SPIE Fellow Fran Ligler, the Lampe Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at NCSU. Ligler received the Innovator of the Year Award for her work in biosensors and fluid control technology. She holds 28 US patents that have led to 11 commercial biosensor products. Currently, she has patent applications pending for two inventions: a diagnostic test that could reduce the duration of surgery for people with hyperparathyroidism and a miniature, disposable pump nicknamed the "hydraulic battery." An SPIE Fellow since 2000, Ligler served on the SPIE Fellows Committee. She has been active in the development of conference programming at SPIE Photonics West for several years, serving on program committees, as a session chair, and as a conference co-chair.
