SPIE Fellow Bruce Smith, professor and director of the microsystems engineering doctoral program at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was named the 2018 Inventor of the Year by the Rochester Intellectual Property Law Association. Smith accepted the honor at a ceremony 12 June.
Since 1973, the Rochester Intellectual Property Law Association has each year recognized as “Distinguished Inventor of the Year” an individual or team of individuals from the local community for their contributions to the useful arts. Smith was recognized for his groundbreaking work in nanolithography first implemented more than 15 years ago which remains an industry standard in how semiconductor devices are manufactured today. This innovative work has led to more than 30 US and international patents, and the foundational technologies he developed are the essential building blocks for electronic devices today.
At RIT, Smith is part of the Future Photon Initiative, one of the university’s signature research areas. He is also a fellow of several prominent professional organizations, including SPIE, who promoted Smith to the rank of Fellow in 2007. In addition to his contributions to the field of advanced microelectronics, Smith was promoted due to his longstanding involvement with the Society. He has served on the Awards Committee, on conference program committees, and as symposium chair and conference chair. He has taught courses at SPIE events for 20 years and presented at events, publishing the proceeding with SPIE, for the same length of time.
