New Co-Editors Appointed for the SPIE Journal of Micro/Nanolithography, MEMS, and MOEMS

Two new co-editors-in-chief will take the helm of the Journal of Micro/Nanolithography, MEMS, and MOEMS (JM3) starting 1 January, 2020. Harry Levinson, a consultant at HJL Lithography, and Hans Zappe, the Gisela and Erwin Sick Professor of Micro-Optics at the University of Freiburg in Germany, will share editorial duties for the journal, published by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

New Findings Affirm Imaging Technique’s Ability to Differentiate Between Healthy and Non-Healthy Tissue After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

In an article published in the peer-reviewed SPIE publication Journal of Biomedical Optics (JBO), "Influence of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on diffuse reflectance spectra of tissue in breast surgery specimens," research observed across 92 ex vivo breast specimens suggests that there is little to no impact on the optical signatures of breast tissue after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

New Optical Array, Multisite Stimulator Advances Optogenetics

In an article published in the peer-reviewed, open-access SPIE publication Neurophotonics, "A multi-site microLED optrode array for neural interfacing," researchers present an implantable optrode array capable of exciting below-surface neurons in large mammal brains at two levels, both by structured-light delivery and large-volume illumination. This development is promising for studies aiming to link neural activity to specific cognitive functions in large mammals.

Min Gu Wins the 2019 SPIE Dennis Gabor Award in Diffractive Optics

Yesterday evening, at the Awards Banquet at SPIE Optics + Photonics in San Diego, SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, honored Min Gu with the Society's Dennis Gabor Award in Diffractive Optics. Named after the Nobel-winning inventor of holography, the SPIE Dennis Gabor Award is presented in recognition of outstanding accomplishments in diffractive wavefront technologies, especially those that further the development of holography and metrology applications. This year's award recognizes Gu's pioneering work in nanoscale information optics, including optically digitized holography and optical data storage using advanced nanomaterials.

SPIE 2019 President Jim Oschmann, Ball Aerospace, retired, made the announcement along with other SPIE election results at the Annual General Meeting of the Society on 13 August during SPIE Optics + Photonics in San Diego. Terms begin 1 January 2020.

With $500,000 Grant to University of Arizona, SPIE Launches $2.5 Million Endowment Matching Program

Today, SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, announces a $2.5 million, five-year, educational-funding initiative. The SPIE Endowment Matching Program will enhance educational capacity in optics and photonics by supporting endowment funding at qualified institutions. The program adds to the more than $4 million that SPIE devotes annually to community support, including scholarships, travel grants, and student programs. The program's first grant of $500,000 creates the SPIE Chair in Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona.

John Dudley Wins the 2019 SPIE Harold E. Edgerton Award

Earlier today, at the SPIE Optical Metrology conference in Munich, SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, honored John Dudley, a professor of physics at the Université de Franch-Comté and head of the Optoelectronics, Photonics, and Telecommunications research group within the CNRS research institute FEMTO-ST, with its 2019 Harold E. Edgerton Award. In 2014, he was the recipient of the Society's President's Award.

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, has agreed to purchase Xmark Media, tradeshow organizer of key photonics exhibitions and conferences in the UK including Photonex Europe, Vacuum Expo, Graphene Expo, and a range of regional photonics roadshows and university exhibitions. The acquisition expands SPIE activities in Europe, adding to established technical events in numerous locations - including Germany, France, and the Czech Republic - which are supported by the SPIE Europe office in Cardiff, UK. With an international constituency of individuals and companies from over 170 countries, SPIE will bring worldwide visibility to Photonex Europe, the UK's premier photonics exhibition.

SPIE-Endorsed STEM Bill Introduced in U.S. Senate

Today, U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) introduced the Keep STEM Talent Act of 2019. The bill provides a clear path for international students studying at a U.S. institution in STEM advanced degrees to stay and work in the U.S. by exempting students who have criteria-approved job offers from the Green Card cap. It also offers dual intent for international students pursuing advanced degrees in STEM, meaning that students could claim interest in staying in the U.S. upon graduation when applying for a student visa.

SPIE Yaver Scholarship Awarded to AIP’s Bethany Johns

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, has awarded its second Yaver Scholarship to SPIE Member Bethany Johns, manager of government relations and public policy at the American Institute of Physics. She intends to use the award to become a Certified Association Executive (CAE), through the America Society of Association Executives. During her studies, she'll maintain her current role with the America Institute of Physics.

SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics Reports Novel Thermoelectric Nanoantenna Design For Use In Solar Energy Harvesting

In an article published in the SPIE Journal of Nanophotonics (JNP), researchers from a collaboration of three labs in Mexico demonstrate an innovative nanodevice for harvesting solar energy. The paper, "Thermoelectric efficiency optimization of nanoantennas for solar energy harvesting," reports that evolutive dipole nanoantennas (EDNs) generate a thermoelectric voltage three times larger than the classic dipole nanoantenna (CDN).

Obert R. Wood II and Akiyoshi Suzuki Recognized with 2019 Frits Zernike Award For Contributions to the Semiconductor Lithography Field

Today, at SPIE Advanced Lithography in San Jose, California, Obert R. Wood II and Akiyoshi Suzuki were presented with the 2019 Frits Zernike Award. The award is presented annually for outstanding accomplishments in microlithographic technology, especially those furthering the development of semiconductor lithographic imaging solutions. Thirty-five photonics business startups from seven countries will participate in the 2019 SPIE Startup Challenge semi-finals, held during SPIE Photonics West on 5 February. On 6 February, six finalists will compete for cash prizes from Jenoptik as well as for business support from Challenge partners and sponsors.
