The 88 new Fellow Members of the Society include three Nobel Prize winners - including the first female Nobel Laureate in Physics more than 50 years - and welcomes a record number of women
BELLINGHAM, Washington, USA and CARDIFF, UK - SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, welcomes 88 Members as new Fellows of the Society this year. They are honored for their technical 
achievements, and for their service to the optics community and to SPIE.
Fellows are Members of the Society who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. Since the Society's inception in 1955, 1,478 SPIE Members have become Fellows.
The 2019 cohort is marked by the induction of 2018's Nobel Laureates in Physics: Gérard Mourou, Arthur Ashkin, and Donna Strickland, the first female Physics Nobel Laureate in 50 years. The Society also welcomes a record number of women - 17 in total this year, including China's Dan Zhu and Korea's Eunkyoung Kim - to the Fellows fold.
"Each year, the new SPIE Fellows represent the interdisciplinary, diverse, and inclusive nature of SPIE and its Members, and this year we welcome a growing number of women," notes 2018 Chair of the SPIE Fellows Committee and Raytheon Space & Airborne Systems engineer Jeffrey Puschell. "With all 88 new Fellows, we honor the wide-ranging and critical light-based technologies being developed and advanced to improve the human condition by scientists in academia, industry, and government. It's been my pleasure to work with the Nominating Committee to recognize the work of these SPIE Members, and it's my pleasure to recognize each one of them for their cumulative and ongoing professional successes."
New Fellows are recognized at the SPIE Symposium of their choice throughout the year. The first group will be awarded at a luncheon at SPIE Photonics West 2019, featuring a presentation by SPIE Fellow Elizabeth Krupinski on "Medical Imaging: The Need for Human-Artificial Intelligence Synergy."
