Yang Huiying

Who or what inspired you to work in science/engineering?
I thank all my family, especially my grandmother for unconditional love and support. My grandmother, born in 1930s China, did not have the opportunity to go to school. Although most of her days were spent taking care of children and doing housework, she had the foresight and tenacity to encourage me and told me, "education is the only thing that can change a woman’s life." That is what I want to say to all young girls.

Primary responsibilities of your current job
My current job is assistant professor. I teach and do scientific research. I feel scientists have the responsibility to convert research into useful tools for society. I am trying to identify low-cost materials that can be used as LEDs. I hope everyone can one day buy high efficiency, low-cost LED lights from the supermarket. In the future, I hope solar energy can be used to power LED indoor lighting. Then we could have sustainable lighting systems in Singapore. I need to investigate new materials and technology to benefi t human life and also transfer this knowledge and technology to our next generation. University is a vibrant place. Working, studying and playing with all the young people makes me happy every day!

Biggest obstacle or challenge that you have faced in your career
Although there are certainly distinguished women professors, their numbers are very low. We face intense competition in the research field. As a scientist, you must propose something no one has thought of before. On the other hand, as a woman scientist, you have to balance your family and children with doing research. With this you are challenged 24 hours a day. I am a very positive person and try to stay focused and do everything efficiently. I love my job and work hard day and night. If I find something no other scientist has reported before, I try to make it clear as soon as possible. Unsolved mysteries really bother me.
