Dawn MunsonA typical work day.
Mechanical engineering at LBNL is multidisciplinary. I work closely with project engineers and designers to review equipment designs and optimize them for fabrication. I also serve as a single point of contact for manufacturing on many large projects at the laboratory. As such, I negotiate priorities with subcontractors, vendors, and our purchasing department. The engineering skills from my education and experience as well as my sincere interest and enjoyment for working with people allow me to facilitate communication among scientists, engineers, mechanical technicians, machinists, sales individuals, and procurement personnel.

What I enjoy most.
I enjoy the variety that is a fundamental part of my job. One day I can be working with a diverse group developing estimates and schedules for future projects, and the next day I might be taking a rough sketch to a shop fl oor machinist to get fabrication feedback. We are all part of the creativity, knowledge, and imagination that goes into the science that can affect our lives for years to come. Being part of this scientifi c development is something I fi nd absolutely awe-inspiring.

Words of wisdom.
Engineering is not a specifi c role-it is a dynamic, multifaceted career option. Never underestimate what you can learn from those you work with, while being receptive to your inner ideas, inspirations, and interests. A different perspective can be an asset to the organization and add to the enjoyment of your career.
