Country of origin: USA

I have worked at the Naval Research Laboratory since 1984 as a research biologist in the Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering. The past 20 years have gone quickly, due primarily to the interest and excitement I have felt working on different projects over the years. My initial challenge, to develop rapid immunoassays for trace detection, has led me on many unexpected paths, ranging from basic studies of antigen/antibody interactions to engineering of optical biosensor devices and, ultimately, to field deployment of instruments. I have had amazing opportunities to travel all over the world, collaborate with technical experts in many fields, present my work to various audiences and pursue new research areas. My current focus on scientific management and technology transfer of research to real-world use is the most challenging aspect of my career to date since it involves meeting both internal and external expectations for a specific technology.
