SPIE 2007 Scholarship and Grant Recipients

In 2007 SPIE will award $292,500 in scholarships and grants to 136 outstanding individuals and 23 educational institutions, based on their potential for long-range contribution to optics and photonics or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated and selected by the SPIE Scholarship Committee and approved in April by the SPIE Board of Directors’ Executive Committee.

To date, SPIE has distributed more than $3 million in individual scholarships and institutional grants. Through 2007, a total of 1019 scholarships to students and 355 grants to educational institutions have been awarded across 84 countries. This ambitious effort reflects the Society’s commitment to education and to the next generation of optical scientists and engineers around the world.

2007 Top Scholarship Winners

Recipients of SPIE scholarships named in honor of meritorious individuals or programs are:

D. J. Lovell Scholarship: Amit Kumar Agrawal, Univ. of Utah (Salt Lake City, UT). The $11,000 D. J. Lovell Scholarship is the Society’s most prestigious scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by SPIE with contributions from Labsphere Inc.

The second largest scholarship given by SPIE, the $10,000 SPIE Scholarship in Optical Science and Engineering, was awarded to Beau A. Standish, Univ. of Toronto (Canada).

Laser Technology, Engineering and Applications Scholarship: Carlos López-Mariscal, Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Mexico). The $4000 Laser Technology, Engineering and Applications Scholarship is awarded in recognition of the student’s scholarly achievement in laser technology, engineering, or applications. Funds are provided in part by a gift from the former Forum for Military Applications of Directed Energy (F-MADE), and in part by SPIE.

William H. Price Scholarship in Optical Engineering: Garam Yun, Univ. of Arizona (Tucson, AZ). The $3000 William H. Price Scholarship in Optical Engineering was established in 1985 to honor Bill Price, a well-respected member of the SPIE technical community. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time graduate or undergraduate student in the field of optical design and engineering.

BACUS Photomask Scholarship: Two BACUS Photomask Scholarships were awarded this year. Chris Clifford, Univ. of California, Berkeley, was awarded $2500, and $2000 was awarded to Nikolay Makarov, Montana State Univ. (Bozeman, MT). The BACUS Photomask Scholarships are awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the field of microlithography with an emphasis on optical tooling and/or semiconductor manufacturing technologies. This scholarship is sponsored by BACUS, SPIE’s Photomask International Technical Group.

New Early Career Award

A new award—the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award—will be given annually to an early career professional in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to any of the engineering or scientific fields of interests to SPIE. The award will be presented at an SPIE conference devoted to the early career professional’s field, and it will be awarded for the first time in 2008. Nominations for this new award are now being accepted.
