Profile Summary

Dr. Shen-En Qian received his PhD in 1990. He is a top government scientist and technical authority at the Canadian Space Agency for last 30 years. He provides leadership to industry and academia in advancing Canadian space programs. He is an internationally recognized expert in optical spacecraft payloads, space technologies for satellite missions and deep space exploration, remote sensing, satellite image processing and enhancement, onboard satellite data compression and data handling. Together with CCSDS members from NASA and other space agencies, he developed three international standards for spaceflight data systems. These standards have benefited over fifty space missions.

Dr. Qian holds 35 patents granted worldwide developed in Canadian government laboratory. He is the sole author of 3 books on optical satellites and signal processing: 1-Hyperspectral Satellites and System Design, 2-Optical Satellite Signal Processing and Enhancement, 3-Optical Satellite Data Compression and Implementation, and an author of chapters in 6 other books. With 200 rocket scientists at national space agencies (NASA, ESA, CSA, DLR, etc.) and PIs at leading universities, he edited and published a must-have handbook “Optical Payloads for Space Missions”. He has published over 130 scientific papers.

Dr. Qian is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE), and a Senior Member of IEEE. The Governor General of Canada presented him the prestigious Canadian national award “Public Service Awards of Excellence" in 2016. He received IEEE Canada Outstanding Engineer Award and Silver Medal in 2019, IEEE Montreal Section Gold Medal in 2022. He received the Canadian Government Invention Award, and Marie Curie Award issued by the European Union. He is an Associate Editor of SPIE’s Journal of Applied Remote Sensing and IEEE’s Journal on Miniaturization for Air and Space System. He is an adjunct professor at York University.
