Dr. Loucas Tsakalakos

Heterogeneous integration of opto-electronic materials systems and devices for photonics/optics, electronic, sensing, quantum, and MEMS/microsystems applications, with a focus on thin films and nanotechnology, and deep application domain expertise. Established core capabilities and programs in MEMS, advanced sensing systems, nanowires/tubes, field emitters, nano-photovoltaics, solar panel optical coatings, CdTe PV modules, fiber optics, integrated photonics, IR camera ROICs, gas lasers, and quantum technologies.

Loucas Tsakalakos is a Director of Engineering within the Lasers Segment at Coherent Corp. He received his BS degree (1995) from Rutgers University, and his MS (1998) and PhD (2000) degrees in Materials Science & Engineering (with minors in Solid State Physics and Microelectromechanical Systems) from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Tsakalakos joined the General Electric Research Center in Niskayuna, NY in 2000, where he led programs in advanced sensor systems, nanotechnology, next generation solar technologies, and worked within GE Energy to develop solar energy products. From 2012-2017 Loucas held the role of Technology Manager -Photonics, where he led a team of 20 PhD and MS level scientists and engineers developing technologies for data communications, sensing, and novel photonics applications. In 2018 he was appointed to the role of Business Program Manager, and also oversaw technology strategy in photonics and quantum technologies (while also co-leading an internal Sensor Synergy Council). Dr. Tsakalakos joined the IR camera unit of L3Harris in 2021 as a Senior Engineering Manager, and in 2023 he joined Coherent Corp. as a Director of Engineering in the Lasers segment. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi (The National Engineering Honor Society), is the (co-)author of over 50 publications (over 100 total including GE internal reports), has given over 80 presentations at international conferences and workshops, and holds 19 U.S. patents.
