Electrical integration of the VenSpec spectrometer consortium: an architecture trade-off

19 August 2024 • 9:50 AM - 10:10 AM PDT

Abstract

The VenSpec suite for ESA's EnVision Mission to Venus aims to create a clean, simple and robust interface between the spacecraft and the three spectrometers. This is achieved through the Central Control Unit (CCU), which harmonizes power and data communication and provides an abstraction layer. The CCU consists of two electrical subsystems, the data handling unit (CCU-DHU) developed by MPS and IDA and the power supply unit (CCU-PSU) developed by IAA-CSIC, both managed by DLR-PF. In 2023, an extensive trade-off analysis was conducted to optimize the system, resulting in a single power and data interface as the most suitable and reliable solution taking into account numerous considerations. This paper explores the suggested options and the chosen architecture for the VenSpec suite.

Friederike Wolff received her BSc in Aerospace Engineering from TU Delft in 2013 and her MSc in Space Science and Technology in 2015 from Lulea Technical University. Since 2015 she has worked for the German Aerospace Center on various space projects. From 2015 to 2019 she contributed to the MASCOT asteroid lander on Hayabusa2 by optimizing the locomotion system based on dedicated multi-body simulations for microgravity. Between 2019 and 2022, she was the system engineer of the DLR contribution to the scientific camera on ESAs Jupiter mission JUICE and joined the laser-altimeter project GALA for the same mission as AIV manager for the last final part of the verification campaign. Since 2022 she is the project manager of the Central Control Unit of the VenSpec Spectrometer consortium on ESAs EnVision Mission to Venus.
