Nobel Laureate Donna Strickland to Speak at SPIE Photonics West 2019

SPIE Photonics West 2019 is delighted to be welcoming newly minted Nobel Laureate Donna Strickland as a plenary speaker at the BiOS conference. Strickland, who will be presenting a more technical version of her Nobel speech, recently published an engaging piece entitled "Reflections from a Nobel winner: Scientists need time to make discoveries." In the article she asserts that, "Learning about science - science for science's sake - is worth supporting....We must give scientists the opportunity through funding and time to pursue curiosity-based, long-term, basic-science research."

Strickland, whose own successful journey of discoveries in the field of laser physics began in the mid-1980s, sees the ongoing impact of her research today in a variety of applications, from laser eye surgery to the inner workings of smartphones, and hopes to see even more in the future.
