Jakob Skov: Developing supercontinuum sources for sensing and diagnostics

Bioimaging and undersea sensors for the oil and gas industry are among the applications of the technology.

Supercontinuum generation is the formation of broad continuous spectra by propagation of high power pulses through nonlinear media. NKT Photonics manufactures a supercontinuum source for demanding commercial and research applications. The development of high-lifetime mode-locked fiber lasers, efficient but highly reliable fiber amplifiers, and the production of highly nonlinear fibers with outstanding reliability characteristics have enabled NKT Photonics' SuperK sources to be deployed in applications from confocal microscopy to critical semiconductor inspection equipment.

NKT Photonics A/S (Birkerød, Denmark) is one of three companies in the NKT Optical Group, all owned by the industrial conglomerate NKT Holding A/S.

Jakob Skov is CEO of NKT Photonics. He joined the organization in 2001, and has held various executive management positions for different companies within NKT Holding. He received an MS in Business Admistration from the Aarhus School of Business.

Prior to his CEO position, Skov worked as an executive assistant in NKT Holding, where he helped formulate and execute the incubation strategy for new ventures within the group. They grew nine fully functional companies from zero to more than 300 people within 18 months. In the same period, Skov participated in M&A transactions in excess of €3 billion and helped formulate a new joint branding strategy for a group of five individual companies, each with more than 100 years of history.
