Welcome to Berlin - The City of Freedom

Hotel booking is open. Take a moment to review your options.

As the political home of Germany’s Federal Government and the educational centre of Germany, Berlin is the nation’s capital and busiest city.  Although major reconstruction projects have helped make Berlin an attractive, modern city, the shadows of World War II and the Berlin Wall still darken its recent history. This is the seat of power where Hitler gained control in 1033 by marching through the Brandenburg Gate and taking over parliament in the Reichstags building. After World War II, Berlin turned into a cold war battleground, separated into the four sectors. But, there are startling contrasts to war in Berlin, such as the intellectual and scientific blossoming of the Enlightenment during the 1700s and the 1920s.

Always as cultural centre, Berlin has continued this tradition with many museums and theaters, while continuing to deal with ongoing reintegration of the West with the East, as well as an economy that is shifting from the processing to the service sector. Many companies returned to Berlin, among them Daimler-Benz, Sony, IBM Germany and German Rail who now all have headquarters there. It is also a large banking centre, and the largest university city in Germany with 147,000 students in three major universities.

The Berlin-Brandenburg region is home to one of the most significant clusters for optics technologies in Europe. Many of these are based at Adlershof, where six buildings comprise 18,600 square metres of labs and office space and companies such as, e.g., Analytik Jena, FISBA Optik, Limmer Laser, and the OpTecBB cluster have found a home. The Adlershof cluster is a short ride away from the Congress Centre.
