    Thomas Thundat to serve as Professor of Empire Innovation at the University at Buffalo RENEW Institute

    SPIE Fellow Thomas Thundat, professor and Canada Excellence Research Chair in Oil Sands Molecular Engineering at the University of Alberta Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, has joined the University at Buffalo’s (UB) RENEW Institute and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Thundat will serve as professor of Empire Innovation at the Institute and in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE).

    RENEW is an interdisciplinary institute dedicated to research and education on globally pressing problems in energy, environment, and water. The director of RENEW, Amit Goyal, and Liesl Folks, dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences announced his appointment in early October. In a joint statement, they expressed that, "[w]e are delighted that Thomas Thundat, an internationally-recognized expert with an exemplary record of research and service, has joined the UB RENEW Institute and CBE. He will boost UB's position as a premier public research university and will significantly impact all the focus areas of RENEW."

    Thundat is an internationally recognized scholar, with 40 patents and over 400 publications, including several with SPIE. He is very active in the Society, presenting and publishing dozens of times and participating on conference committees for SPIE Defense + Commercial Sensing for a decade. He was awarded the status of SPIE Fellow in 2013.
