SPIE CEO Eugene Arthurs and SPIE Manager of Membership and Community Services Bonnie Peterson traveled to Galway, Ireland last month to attend Photonics Ireland 2017. The biennial conference series ran from 13 to 15 September and is the premier conference event for photonics research in Ireland, showcasing some of the latest research in optics and photonics.

This year's event was organized by two members of the Society. SPIE Fellow Martin Leahy, Chair of Applied Physics at the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway, serves as Conference Chair for the event, and SPIE Member Gerard O’Connor, Senior Lecturer School of Physics at NUI Galway, is the Programme Chair.

Photonics Ireland brings members of the photonics community together to strategize, identify, and execute activities in the global photonics market aimed at increasing economic activity and job growth, and develop technologies designed to improve day-to-day life. Dr. Arthurs was one of the high-profile speakers brought to the conference to share his perspective with the community. He delivered his invited talk, ‘Seeing the Light. A Career in the Photonic Industry’ on 14 September as part of the Industry and Entrepreneurship session.

SPIE Senior Member Stefan Andersson-Engels, Head of Biophotonics at IPIC-Irish Photonics Integration Centre at Tyndall National Institute, delivered one of the opening keynote discussions, Biophotonics@Tyndall – the interface between light and life. Andersson-Engels was also on hand at the event as the advisor for the newly formed SPIE Student Chapter at Tyndall – University College Cork. Dr. Arthurs and Bonnie Peterson welcomed members of the new Student Chapter to the SPIE community.
