The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected 86 new members and 18 new foreign members in 2019, including SPIE Members Robert Lorenz and Barry Shoop. Individuals of the newly-elected class will be formally inducted during NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on 6 October 2019.
“Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer,” said the Academy in a statement released 7 February. “Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education…”
Significant contributions to engineering literature, pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, and developing and/or implementing innovative approaches to engineering education are also grounds for election.
SPIE Member Lorenz is elected to the membership posthumously. He was the Elmer and Janet Kaiser Chair and Consolidated Papers Professor of Controls Engineering in the department of mechanical engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is recognized for his contributions to modeling and control of cross-coupled electromechanical systems for high-performance electric machines and drives.
SPIE Fellow Barry Shoop is dean and professor of electrical engineering at the Albert Nerken School of Engineering at The Cooper Union in New York City. He is recognized for leadership in developing engineering systems solutions for national security and contributions to military engineering education.
