SPIE Fellow Rick Millane, a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Canterbury(UC), was awarded the University of Canterbury's Research Medal 2018, one of the highest awards the University’s Council can bestow. The 2018 medal was officially presented to Millane by UC Chancellor, Dr. John Wood, at the Chancellor’s Dinner in December.
According to the UC website, the Research Medal is awarded annually to a member of the UC staff where excellence is most likely to be demonstrated by a sustained record of research of the highest quality or by research of outstanding merit produced over a more limited timeframe. “The annual award goes to a UC researcher whose work has been recognized as truly world class, and I look forward to presenting Professor Millane with his medal,” said Chancellor Wood when the award was announced in July of last year. “Professor Millane is an internationally acclaimed researcher whose work has wide impact, and of whom the University can be proud, as both an academic and a graduate of UC. He is a fitting recipient of the University of Canterbury Research Medal.”
Millane, who was made an SPIE Fellow in 2012, is a very active Member of the SPIE community. He has been involved with conference development as a conference chair or program committee member for nearly three decades. He continues to present at events as well, most recently at SPIE Optics + Photonics this August. He has also served the Society as an editor and course instructor.
