Omkaram Nalamasu and Yasuhiko Arakawa elected to the National Academy of Engineering class of 2017

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected 106 new members in 2017 including photonics community members Yasuhiko Arakawa and SPIE Member Omkaram Nalamasu. Individuals of the newly-elected class will be formally inducted during NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on 8 October 2017.

"Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer," said the Academy. "Membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education…"

Significant contributions to engineering literature, pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, and developing and/or implementing innovative approaches to engineering education are also grounds for election.

Arakawa is a professor in the electrical engineering department at University of Tokyo. He has been recognized for contributions to quantum dot lasers and related nanophotonic devices.

Nalamasu is the senior vice president and chief technology officer of Applied Materials Inc., and president of Applied Ventures LLC in Santa Clara, California. He has been recognized for technical innovation spanning materials development, atomically controlled thin film fabrication, and commercialization in microelectronics, energy generation, and storage.

Nalamasu's involvement with SPIE includes serving on a conference program committee and as a conference chair. He is also an author of 33 conference proceedings papers published in the SPIE Digital Library.
