L’Institut d’Optique to celebrate 100th anniversary

06 October 2017

The Institut d'Optique marks its 100th anniversary this month as an institution of higher education and research in the fields of optics and photonics. The institute is organizing a centenary week from 9 to 15 October 2017 with events taking place on its three campuses in Bordeaux, Palaiseau, and Saint-Étienne.

Over the course of one hundred years, the Institut d'Optique has grown from a one-year course taken by a few students, to graduating 150 student-engineers from its three campuses. The institute has maintained its mission of supporting the French photonics industry by combining the education of scientific engineers, with doctoral training, and with innovative entrepreneurship and research at the highest level with its three laboratories: Charles Fabry Laboratory, Laboratoire Photonique Numérique and Nanosciences (LP2N), and Laboratory Hubert Curien.

SPIE Member Paul Montgomery, a senior research scientist at the University of Strasbourg, will represent SPIE at the celebrations and present a plaque to the Institute’s Director General Jean-Louis Martin. The gift recognizes the world-class status of the institute with its state-of-the-art laboratories, top-ranked school of engineering, and partnerships with industry.
