Joseph DeSimone receives Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment

On 14 September, the Heinz Foundation announced the five recipients of the 2017 Heinz Awards. SPIE Member Joseph DeSimone, the Chancellor’s Eminent Professor of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University, received the 22nd Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy and Employment.

Established in 1993 in honor of US Senator John Heinz, the awards celebrate his accomplishments and spirit by recognizing the extraordinary achievements of individuals in the areas of greatest importance to him: Arts and Humanities, Environment, Human Condition, Public Policy, and Technology, the Economy and Employment. Each awardee receives an unrestricted prize of US$250,000, among the largest individual achievement prizes in the world, and a cast silver medallion.

DeSimone is recognized for his achievements in developing and commercializing advanced technologies in several cutting-edge fields such as 3D printing, precision medicine, nanoparticle fabrication and green chemistry. He is also recognized for his commitment to diversity in the STEM fields and for his leadership in convergence research, a new model that integrates life, physical and engineering sciences to achieve innovations that positively impact human life in the areas of health, environment, energy and the economy.

DeSimone holds nearly 200 patents, which have also led him to found multiple companies based on his work. He also has more than 350 publications, several with SPIE proceeding having presented at SPIE events for over a decade.
