Christine Hendon honored with Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists & Engineers

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has honored SPIE Member Christine Hendon, assistant professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Along with 102 other individuals, Hendon is the recipient of the highest honor granted by the United States Government to science and engineering professionals who are in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Hendon's research interests include developing optical imaging and spectroscopy instruments for applications in cardiac electrophysiology and interventional cardiology. She received her B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) in 2004, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University (USA) in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

"I congratulate these outstanding scientists and engineers on their impactful work," President Obama said. "These innovators are working to help keep the United States on the cutting edge, showing that Federal investments in science lead to advancements that expand our knowledge of the world around us and contribute to our economy."

The 2017 recipients are employed or funded by the following U.S. departments and agencies: Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of the Interior, Department of Veterans Affairs, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Science Foundation, Smithsonian Institution, and the Intelligence Community. These departments and agencies come together annually to recognize the most admirable scientists and engineers who show the greatest promise for assuring America’s leadership in science and engineering and who contribute to the awarding agencies' missions.

Most recently, Hendon served as the Myocardium Session Chair for the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications of Light in Cardiology conference and the New Technologies Session Chair for the Advanced Biomedical and Clinical Diagnostic and Surgical Guidance Systems XV conference at SPIE Photonics West 2017 in San Francisco, CA. She is also a co-author of an impressive 12 papers presented at the meeting.
