Andrea Alù

SPIE Fellow Andrea Alù, Temple Foundation Endowed Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the 2016 ICO Prize by the International Commission for Optics (ICO).
Each year, the ICO awards the ICO Prize to an individual who has made a noteworthy contribution to optics, and published or submitted for publication before he or she has reached the age of 40. The "noteworthy" contribution in optics is measured chiefly by its impact (past or possibly future) on the field of optics generally, opening a subfield or significantly expanding an established subfield in research or technology. Alù was recognized "for his groundbreaking work on metatronics for ultrafast electronics and the localization of optical radiation in structured materials."
Alù was the 2012 recipient of the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award in recognition of his pioneering contributions to optical metamaterials and plasmonic phenomena. His achievements in these areas also contributed to his promotion to Fellow of the Society this year. He has presented dozens of times at SPIE events and has served as session chair and on program committees. Along with several other highly reputable scientific journals, Alù has contributed to the Journal of Nanophotonics.
